This mesmerising print has been made using neuroimaging of the effects of anxiety on the brain - here, the neural pathways between the amygdala, which controls our 'fight or flight' response, and the hippocampus, responsible for emotional processing and memory function, among other things.
In tackling the stigma of mental illness - something which is sadly often dismissed by even the most well-intentioned of loved ones as "all in the mind" - neuroimaging has been a wonderful way of educating the general population on the physiological effects of anxiety, as well as helping scientists explore new and effective treatments for those suffering from anxiety disorders.
